Perth renters thrown lifeline as “perfect storm” housing crisis looms

Peter de Kruijff
The Sydney Morning Herald (Paywall)

Rental tenants in Western Australia who fear being kicked out on the street once a COVID-19 eviction moratorium lifts in March have been thrown a lifeline from the state government. A $30 million residential rent relief grant scheme will be expanded so landlords can receive a one-off payment equal to 75 per cent of rent arrears from the emergency pandemic period, worth up to $4000.

Yes, older Australians need more home-care funding. But these dribs and drabs only make a dent in the waiting list.

Stephen Duckett and Anika Stobart
The Conversation (No paywall)

Aged care in Australia is underfunded. As a consequence, many older Australians don’t have the support they need. Today’s federal government announcement of A$850 million for an additional 10,000 home care packages goes some way to addressing the long waiting list of people who need support at home. But it’s not enough.
