Renters and supporters celebrate announcement of 'no grounds' ban

Renters and community supporters are celebrating the government's announcement that 'no grounds' evictions will finally be banned in New South Wales.
After decades of campaigning by renters, community supporters and housing policy experts, the NSW Government is introducing new legislation to end no-grounds evictions.
The bill proposes a simple, but absolutely integral change – if a tenant is doing everything right in their rental home the landlord can only end the lease with a reasonable reason, and fair notice. Removing 'no grounds' evictions is an incredible step in making renting fairer for all renters in NSW, and goes a long way in eliminating the fear many of us feel in asserting our rights in our own homes as tenants, as we would live in fear of an eviction for no reason. Following the announcement, the Tenants' Union called a press conference outside NSW Parliament on 29 July, to celebrate this milestone. We were pleased to be joined by many of our community partners in the Make Renting Fair campaign: including Sydney Alliance, Homelessness NSW, Shelter NSW, NCOSS, Redfern Legal Centre, Australian Services Union, Vinnies NSW, Women’s & Girls’ Emergency Centre, Unions NSW and Metro Assist.
