The Tenants Union works towards a society in which people in NSW can access safe, secure and affordable rental housing. We are a Community Legal Centre specialising in housing law and the peak organisation for tenants in NSW. We use a strategic mix of legal action, education, policy solutions and advocacy to make a difference in the lives of people who rent. In undertaking our work, we help people and communities understand their rights and take action to defend their rights and the rights of others.
A part-time (21 hours) Paralegal (Aboriginal) is required to join the legal practice of the Centre working in the area of housing issues for and with Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander clients. This position will make a critical difference to housing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander renters in NSW.
The successful candidate will support the work of the solicitor assisting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients by liaising with clients and witnesses, undertaking legal research, drafting documents, filing and serving documents, managing files and giving other administrative support. The role offers significant practice experience often not available in paralegal roles.
You will be part of a supportive team of lawyers and a network of Aboriginal advocates. The Tenants' Union will offer additional support to you through connections with organisations supporting law students and early career workers from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, such as Ngalaya Indigenous Corporation. The level and style of support can be negotiated with the Aboriginal Paralegal to be responsive to their ongoing career, academic and cultural needs and development.
Our office is located in Sydney CBD close to Town Hall train station. Work place is hybrid – you can choose to work from home 1-2 days per week and we can negotiate more around required tasks, but we know some people love coming to the office! You will also be expected to travel within New South Wales from time to time.
Salary range $51.57-$53.94 per hour (pro rata equivalent $94,111 to $98,375 per annum) plus salary packaging and generous conditions.
