When renters organise, we can win! The plan to fix renting in Aotearea
02/11/2021
We’re relaunching our Make Renting Fair campaign, and we are exploring alongside our community: what can we do to build a fairer renting system? What can we learn from successes overseas about how we can organise renters and win?
The second in the relaunch event series was on Thursday, 11 November, where we heard from Renters United in New Zealand!
The People's Review of Renting: NZ renters' plan to fix renting
Renters United is an advocacy group that organises renters and campaigns to make renting in Aotearoa, New Zealand, better for everyone. In 2017 Renters United undertook a large piece of work to review the reality of renting in 2017, called the People's Review of Renting. This review sparked inspiration among tenants, and tenant advocacy groups which lead to The Plan to Fix Renting. When these pieces of work were delivered to the steps of parliament it sparked the goverment's own review into renting and lead to the largest change to the Residential Tenancies Act since it was introduced in 1986.
