Offer to pay rent arrears

You can send this sample letter to your landlord when you have fallen into rent arrears, and would like to enter into a payment plan to pay off the rent arrears. If you have not received a notice of termination you can still send the letter but you will need to adjust the text.

Copy and paste the template letter below or download a copy from the link above. Remember to substitute your details for the details contained in [square brackets].

[Your name and address]

[Date]

[Landlord’s or agent’s name and address]

Dear …

Re: Payment of arrears at [your address]

I am aware that I am currently in $[amount] of rent arrears at the above premises and am in receipt of your termination notice.

[OR]

I am aware that I am currently in $[amount] owing in (water usage charges) or (utility charges).

I propose to pay these arrears off at $[amount] [per week/fortnight] on top of my usual rent. I will continue paying this extra amount until the arrears are paid off.

In good faith, I enclose a cheque for this amount as the first payment. [Delete if not applicable]

If this is acceptable to you I ask that you confirm this in writing with me and inform the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal that a hearing is no longer required.

If you would like to discuss this further please contact me on [phone number].

Yours sincerely

[T Tenant]
