The NSW Government announced it has boosted funding for Tenants Advice & Advocacy Services by $1 million annually until 2028, increasing the 2024-25 budget to $16.2 million.
The Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Program consists of 21 local organisations across NSW, handling around 30,000 requests for tenancy advice each year. The network of services provides invaluable support to renters, assisting them to navigate the rental sector. Through advice, representation and community education advice services assist to resolve issues early and spread awareness of legal rights and responsibilities.
Leo Patterson Ross, CEO of the Tenants’ Union of NSW, welcomed the funding increase:
“We welcome this additional funding which will make it easier for renters to seek the expert, free advice, and practical advocacy that the Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Program provides.
“Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Services are an important part of resolving disputes fairly. We help ensure renters know where they stand and help avoid prolonged disputes and unnecessary tribunal applications.
While acknowledging the increase, he also nonetheless pointed out that further funding is required to ensure they are able to provide advice and advocacy for all who need it. Even with the announced increase the Tenants' Advice and Advocacy Program is only funded to provide the same amount of service as it was in 2008, though the needs of the community have grown significantly since then.
“We look forward to continuing to work with the NSW Government to cover funding needs that have emerged with the growing renting population and as important tenancy reforms come into effect.”
